The troops confronted the Tamil Tigers in the Kallikulam area, Mannar, around 4.45 p.m. (1115 GMT) Saturday, the MCNS said in a statement.

The troops also recovered 50 anti-personnel mine in the same area.

No damage was reported to the troops, the MCNS said.

More than 5,000 people have died in the island’s separatist armed conflict since the end of 2005.

Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.
