“Mu’mtaz al-A’araji, a member in the provincial council, was killed when unknown gunmen attacked his convoy with small arms fire when (he was) heading to his office in the al-Wihda neighbourhood in southern (part of) the city,” the source said on condition of anonymity.

The attack also resulted in the killing of three bodyguards, he added.

Earlier Saturday, gunmen shot dead three Sunni clerics in separate attacks.

Mosul, Iraq’s third largest city, some 400 km north of Baghdad, has long been the hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the US-led invasion in 2003.
