Sydney : A 30-year-old Indian man found dead in a Sydney hotel on March 25 was an actor in British director Tim Supple’s acclaimed touring production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
According to the police, the man was found dead by staff at a hotel on Hosking Place, in the central business district of Sydney, about 3 p.m. on March 25, three days after the theatre season ended.
The multilingual production of the Shakespearean comedy was performed at the Sydney Theatre from March 11 to 22.
His identity has been withheld and the police told IANS that the death is not being treated as suspicious.
Arts Projects Australia (APA), which was presenting the show, said in a statement: ” A member of the Midsummer Dream Company has died in Sydney some days after the conclusion of the Sydney season of the production. Until police enquires and a post mortem is completed we have no knowledge of the cause of death but believe that it was due to natural causes and that there are no suspicious circumstances.
“Fortunately a number of the company were also in Sydney having a few days’ holiday at the end of the tour and they were able to assist police and the Indian High Commission with the necessary arrangements in these very sad circumstances.
“Until the next of kin in India can be notified and formal enquiries completed we cannot release the individual’s name nor make any further comment.”
After playing to rave reviews in India and Britain, the imaginatively filmed and reworked comedy was a super hit at the Perth and Adelaide Festivals, and in Sydney.
