New Delhi : An emergency meeting of the National Commission for the Scheduled Castes held here Thursday decided not to issue any notice to Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Mahendra Singh Tikait for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.
“The full commission meeting decided not to issue any notice to Tikait unless the commission receives a written complaint against him. So far, we haven’t received any such complaint, nor have read the remarks anywhere. Hence, the meeting decided to wait for such a complaint before initiating any action,” a member of the commission told IANS, pleading anonymity.
Asked why the commission did not take suo moto cognisance of Tikait’s remarks, which appeared in the media, the member said: “The commission can take suo moto notice of such remarks only if there’s a concrete basis. Here in this case, we haven’t been able to access any such thing on which we can move on our own.”
The commission meeting also expressed dismay over Mayawati’s demand for the resignation of Buta Singh as the chairman of the commission.
“Instead of seeking Buta Singh’s resignation, Mayawati should have lodged a formal complaint with the commission so that we could have initiated proceedings against Tikait if necessary,” the member said.
Buta Singh is likely to make a formal statement on the issue Friday.
