New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will celebrate its 28th birth anniversary Sunday with the launch of a website dedicated to party leader L.K. Advani’s autobiography “My Country, My Life”.
BJP sources said party president Rajnath Singh will launch the website at the party headquarters here at 11 a.m. Advani and other senior party leaders will be present on the occasion.
Advani’s autobiography, launched on March 19, has created a fair share of controversies. In a spate of interviews that followed the book launch, Advani gave statements that drew criticism from other parties.
The most controversial of these was his contention that he was not aware of the decision to send then foreign minister Jaswant Singh with the three Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists to Kandahar during the IC-814 hijack in December 1999. The terrorists were exchanged to free the 160 hostages.
Advani was the home minister in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government that was in power then.
The book has also drawn flak for factual errors. It states that Robert Blackwill was the US ambassador to India at the time of the Kandahar hijack and that Bhagat Singh was hanged for throwing a bomb in the Delhi assembly.
BJP was formed on April 6, 1980 after dissolution of the erstwhile Jan Sangh. It headed the NDA, a coalition of 18 parties, which was in government from 1998 to 2004.
