Basra, Iraq : A senior Iraqi Interior Ministry officer escaped unhurt a roadside bomb attack on his convoy in Iraq’s second largest city of Basra on Monday, a local police source said.
“Brigadier Abdul Kareem Khalaf, head of Interior Ministry’s operations office, has survived around midday a roadside bomb attack on his convoy in the Nashwah area in north of Basra,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Two of Khalaf’s bodyguards were wounded in the attack, the source said.
Recently, Basra was the scene of fierce clashes between Shiite militias and U.S.-backed Iraqi security forces after the latter launched a massive offensive, dubbed “Operation Cavalry Assault” aimed at restoring order in the city where instability was spreading.
