The release was the result of mediation by the Gaddafi Foundation for Welfare and Development, which conducted a dialogue with the extremists.

The foundation is headed by Seif al-Islam, the son of Libyan President Moamer Gaddafi. The dialogue reportedly was able to convince the extremists to commit themselves to a modern Libya.

The released suspects comprised about one-third of the members of the group of the “Fighting Union for Libya”.
