Bhopal : Five people, including a 14-month baby, were crushed to death by speeding trains in two separate incidents in Madhya Pradesh, railway officials said here Wednesday.
The incidents took place late Tuesday in Jhabua and Raisen districts. The first tragedy occurred between the Ananth and Meghnagar railway stations in Jhabua, when two men jumped out of the Veerawal Express on hearing a fire alarm and were crushed under a goods train coming from the opposite direction.
Sanjay Ram from Jharkhand and Valmiki Pal from Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district were standing near the door and panicked when passengers in the general coach noticed sparks from a short circuit and raised an alarm while the train was nearing Meghnagar station.
“They jumped out of the moving train and came under the goods train,” said a railway official.
The second incident took place near the Mandideep station in neighbouring Raisen.
According to officials, Padam Singh, a resident of Mandideep, was on his way back from Jhansi with his family, including his mentally challenged wife Urmila and their 14-month-old daughter. They had got off near the station when Urmila heard the siren of the oncoming Tamil Nadu Express and ran towards it. Her sister-in-law Vimla, who was carrying the baby, ran after her.
The three died on the spot when they came under the wheels of the train.
