The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said in a statement Tuesday that it would send to Beijing its largest Olympic delegation ever.

“(Venezuela) expresses its total and unrestricted solidarity with the government and the people of the People’s Republic of China in the face of the unceasing and systematic campaign of insults … (by) large mass communications companies,” the statement said.

The remarks referred to the worldwide protests that have followed the Olympic flame on its way around the world before the August Olympics in China. The protests are aimed at China’s crackdown on Tibetan demonstrations against Chinese rule.

The Venezuelan ministry charged that the media had manipulated the coverage of violent protests in Tibet, and blamed the manipulation on “US psychological warfare laboratories” which are trying to “destabilize countries that do not fold before the mandates of the empire” in a docile way.

Venezuela’s leftist populist President Hugo Chavez refers to the United States as “the empire”.

Venezuelan authorities called the Beijing Olympics as “the best-organized in modern history”.

Following troubled laps in London and Paris, the Olympic torch relay was set to continue in San Francisco. On Friday, it was set to visit Buenos Aires, the only Latin American stop in the controversial relay.
