Jeddah : The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has reiterated the unambiguous and firm support of the OIC to the United Nations and its universal and commendable role in catering for the good of humanity at all levels. While reacting to some recent declarations and threats targeting the United Nations, he praised the constant efforts of the UN and its indispensable work to help the people of the world to cope with the challenges of the 21st Century, and to ensure peaceful settlements to all disputes confronting the humanity, prominent among which are the chronic crisis in the Middle East and the conflicts affecting the Muslim world, the OIC chief said in a statement.
Prof. Ihsanoglu stated that considering its dedicated services, some time carried out under very challenging conditions and the high sacrifices suffered by its personnel, the United Nations is a unique organization that deserves all acclaim and trust. While calling for the utmost necessity to protect the safety of the UN personnel and to facilitate their missions, the Secretary General condemn all evil terrorist attacks targeting the UN offices and personnel which have caused loss of many innocent lives.
Renewing the high expectations of the Muslim world from the United Nations, the Secretary General expressed his satisfaction with the ever-increasing cooperation between the UN and the OIC in various fields and highlighted the remarkably positive spirit of cooperation he personally has had with the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the present Secretary General Ban-ki Moon.
Prof. Ihsanoglu praised the UN Secretary General’s crucial role in raising the level of cooperation between the OIC and the UN institutions and in sponsoring and supporting the Alliance of Civilization project, to improve understanding among nations and peoples across cultures and religions. He also commended the efforts and statements of Ban-ki Moon, who, on every occasion, has voiced his great respect for the OIC and the Muslim world.
