The attack killed two Israeli civilian contractors working to supply fuel to the Gaza Strip and injured a number of civilians, the statement added.

Gravely concerned at the prospect of an escalation in violence, Ban said that while he recognizes Israel’s legitimate right to self-defense, he deplores the “reported” civilian casualties among Palestinians during Israeli military operations in the afternoon.

Five Palestinians were reported killed during the Israeli attack on Gaza in retaliation.

“The United Nations calls for the protection of all civilians in the conflict,” the statement said.
