Chief of the Kandahar provincial police office, general Sayed Aqa Aaqib, told media the explosion took place downtown when an attacker detonated the car bomb near a military convoy from the Canadian NATO troops.

At least 14 shops from the main street were damaged by the explosion, explained Aaqib, who said he was unaware whether NATO soldiers have registered casualties or not.

Kandahar, where most Canadian troops are deployed, has experienced several attacks of which the most deadly was last February 17, killing over 100 people.
