Colombo : Lauding India for its constructive support to the Sri Lankan government, the island nation’s Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake has claimed that New Delhi never supported the pro-LTTE activities of Tamil National Movement leader P Nedumaran.

“Some parties and people in Tamil Nadu are encouraging Nedumaran but the Indian government is not supporting him,” Wickremanayake told Sri Lankan Parliament yesterday.

Late last month Nedumaran along with 164 others were arrested in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu state, for defying a ban on staging a demonstration against the alleged sale of arms by India to Sri Lanka (to fight the LTTE) among other issues.

The protesters also denounced attacks on the Tamil Nadu fishermen, allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy, in the international waters.

The Sri Lankan Prime Minister said all countries must adopt a common approach to eradicate the global threat of terrorism.

He said since terrorism had become a global phenomenon it is not desirable that different countries adopt different tactics to defeat it.

“How can the defeat of terrorism be good for certain countries but bad for us,” he asked while opening the debate on Emergency in the House.

The LTTE has engaged in various acts of destruction to destroy the democratic process due to severe set-backs it has suffered in the North, the Prime Minister said.
