New York : The 56-member Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) has condemned threats by terrorists to target the United Nations, stressing the world organization’s role in advocating peace, advancing respect and creates an understanding among the people.
Its Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu reiterated the organisation’s “unambiguous and firm support” to the United Nations and its “universal and commendable role” in catering to the good of humanity at all levels.
While calling for the necessity to protect the safety of the U.N. personnel and to facilitate their missions, the Secretary General condemned “all evil terrorist attacks targeting the U.N. offices and personnel which have caused loss of many innocent lives.”
Ihsanoglu, was quoted by the Press Trust of India (PTI), as saying in a statement on Wednesday, praised the constant efforts of the U.N. and its indispensable work to help the people of the world to cope with the challenges of the 21st century.
Ihsanoglu also stressed the role of the U.N. to bring about peaceful settlements to all disputes confronting humanity, prominent among which were the chronic crisis in the Middle East and the conflicts affecting the Muslim world.
Speaking about the “high expectations” of the Muslim world from the U.N., Ihsanoglu expressed his satisfaction with the ever-increasing cooperation between the United Nations and the OIC in various fields and highlighted the remarkably positive spirit of cooperation he personally has had with the former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and the present head of the world body Ban Ki Moon.
