Sanya (China) : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf Friday said he opposed all attempts to politicise and disrupt the Beijing Olympics and called Tibet an inalienable part of China.
Musharraf, on five-day state visit to China, told his counterpart Hu Jintao during a meeting in the southernmost island resort that his country was confident the Beijing Olympics would be a success.
“Pakistan firmly opposes any attempt to politicise the Beijing Olympic games and any actions to disrupt the event,” the Pakistani leader told Hu.
He assured Hu that his government would do its best to ensure the safety of the Olympic torch during its Islamabad relay April 16.
In an interview with Xinhua prior to his China visit, the Pakistani president had said he would take part in the torch relay ceremony in Islamabad.
Musharraf said Pakistan regarded Tibet as an “inalienable part of Chinese territory and firmly opposes any actions to split China” and added that his country would strengthen cooperation with China in their anti-terror campaign.
During his meeting with Musharraf, President Hu put forward a five-point strategic partnership proposal to deepen bilateral relations.
The strategic partnership proposed by the Chinese president envisioned exchanges between the legislatures, political parties and the armed forces of the two countries, deepening and diversification of trade relations and consultations on major issues.
Hu proposed that negotiations on service trade should be accelerated, and a comprehensive free trade area be established at the earliest.
The Chinese president urged the two countries to strengthen cooperation in fighting terrorism and drug control, and enhance exchanges and cooperation over security during the Beijing Olympic Games.
Hu suggested the two countries act in close cooperation at various international and regional forums such as the UN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations, and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.
Musharraf arrived in China Thursday on a five-day visit. During his stay in Hainan, Musharraf will also attend the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), due to open Saturday afternoon in Boao.
