The Dawn TV gave no reason why he withdrew his resignation.

Altaf Hussain tendered his resignation in reaction to Karachi violence on Wednesday, during which a number of innocent people were killed in riots, official Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said.

The violence occurred after the manhandling of a former federal minister on Tuesday night.

Sher Afgan Niazi, former parliamentary affairs minister who was known as an ardent supporter of President Pervez Musharraf, was roughed up by a crowd of lawyers in the eastern city of Lahore Tuesday evening as he was brought out of a building that was besieged by attorneys for more than four hours.

In reaction, a group of pro-Musharraf MQM activists on Wednesday clashed with attorneys in Karachi, the country’s commercial hub. The clashes turned violent as mobs set dozens of vehicles and some buildings on fire.

Former ruling party MQM was defeated in the Feb. 18 elections and sat on the opposition bench.
