Raipur : The Chhattisgarh government Friday asked the district collectors and the superintendents of police (SP) of all the 18 districts to conduct surprise raids on jails to rein in criminals.
The state’s home department in a letter sent to the SPs and district collectors asked them to conduct surprise searches of jails to ensure strict implementation of jail manuals and to contain the criminals who pose a threat to jail security.
The letter was sent after alcohol and mobile phones were recovered in a police raid last week at the state’s high-profile Raipur central jail.
The government suspended jail superintendent S.K. Mishra. The jail houses about 2,200 prisoners, of which at least 200 are Maoist prisoners.
Two deputy jailers were suspended Thursday following a gang war in Bilaspur central jail last month.
