Dubai : The Assamese community in the Gulf celebrated Rongali Bihu to mark the Assamese New Year’s Day over the weekend even as the festival started in Assam Monday.
Well-known artistes from Assam entertained a 150-strong crowd here at a hotel.
Moinul Haque, one of the biggest names in the art of mime in India, kept the audience in raptures in a 30-minute show.
Krishnamani Nath entertained the crowd with Assamese modern songs and Bihu songs.
Another high point of the programme was the one-man humour act of Devaprasanna Das.
“We celebrate Bihu in the Gulf a few days in advance since our artistes become tied down once the festival gets under way in Assam,” Dilip Bora, a Dubai-based Assamese professional, told IANS.
In Oman, over 100 expatriate Assamese gathered at the Al Sawadi Beach Resort, 100 km from Muscat, to celebrate the event.
Well-known Assamese ghazal singer Anirban Das was the prime attraction of the show.
“Though Anirban Das is known for his ghazals, he sang a number of Bihu songs to mark the occasion,” Sandeep Barooah, a Muscat-based Assamese told IANS.
