Gaza : The deposed Hamas government in Gaza on Sunday said progress has been made towards achieving calmness in Gaza and lifting the Israeli siege on the Hamas-ruled territory.
The progress was made during talks in Cairo between Egyptian officials and a Hamas delegation, comprising former Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar and former Interior Minister Said Siam, said government spokesman Taher al-Nounou.
The Gaza-based delegation headed to Syria later to brief exiled Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal on the latest development. “Hamas delegation showed enough flexibility on a new Egyptian proposal for calmness that includes lifting the siege on Gaza and reopening the crossings,” said al-Nounou.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Saturday said Hamas was going to accept a period of quiet to enable Israel and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to make progress in their peace talks.
Al-Nounou, however, rejected the peace talks as “useless and unjustifiable,” adding that the talks did not offer anything new to the Palestinian people.
