Syrian President Al-Assad receives former US President Carter

Damascus : Syrian President Bashar al-Assad talk with former US President Jimmy Carter have dealt with round of President Carter in the region and its goals, the Syrian-American relations, the tragic situation in Gaza, the political and security developments in Iraq and the situation in Lebanon in addition to the peace process in the Middle East.

The two sides, during their meeting Saturday afternoon, stressed the importance of achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region and support for the principle of dialogue for finding political solutions to the standing issues in the region and mobilizing efforts to ease the suffering of the Palestinian people and lift the embargo imposed on Gaza.

President Carter and the accompanying delegation expressed satisfaction over what they have heard from President al-Assad on the constructive role of Syria in finding solutions to the outstanding issues in the region.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Fayssal Mikdad and the delegation accompanied to President Carter.

Earlier, Carter, during his visit to the Palestinian territories a few days ago, affirmed the necessity of Hamas and Syria to participate in any future peace process and any final agreement in the region.

Carter stressed that he would meet all the Palestinian factions despite the rhetoric that this is a controversial matter and emphasized that he will pay a fact-finding tour in the region, hoping that his tour will have a positive impact on the peace process.

He said that he don’t play a role in the negotiations or mediation efforts.

Carter, who was elected as a President of the United States between 1976 and 1980 had visited Damascus three times in the years 1983,1987,1990 and met with senior Syrian officials.

Carter, during his term of presidency, adopted a foreign policy of open characteristic on the world and authorized 21 best selling series books in the United States including a book published in June 2006 in which he compares between Israeli government and government of the racial discrimination in South Africa previously.
