Addressing a press conference in Lucknow on 24th April, president of All India Muslim Forum Dr. M.K. Sherwani demanded that 8.5 % quota for Muslim backwards should be fixed within the stipulated ambit of 27% reservations under the Mandal Commission. He also demanded inclusion of some Muslim castes in the category of Scheduled Castes, and the retention of the status of those from the Scheduled Castes who convert to Islam or Christianity within the definition of Article 341 of the Constitution.

The organization also demanded the Central government to restore the minority character of Aligarh Muslim University.

Sherwani came down heavily on some Ulema and Muslim organizations that for the sake of their personal glorification and financial allurements forge unholy alliances with political parties, especially during every pre-electoral phase.
