Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh) : Eight people were injured when bombs were hurled at Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Chandra Bhadra Singh alias Sonu Singh and his brother Thursday from the second floor of a district court building here.
Three policemen, including a sub-inspector, and three lawyers were seriously injured in the attack. The legislator and his brother, who suffered minor injuries, were discharged from hospital after first-aid.
One of the lawyers, who jumped from the second floor in the melee that followed the attack, is critically wounded.
Superintendent of Police (City) Uday Shanker Jaiswal said two crude but powerful bombs were thrown at the lawmaker and his brother, Yash Bhadra Singh alias Monu Singh.
Police had brought the duo to the court for a hearing in a special court handling cases under the Gangsters Act. The assailants, who are yet to be identified, managed to escape in the stampede that followed the attack. One unused crude explosive device was later found from the court premises.
Jaiswal said the police were not sure about the identity of the attackers but they suspect involvement of Inder Dev Singh, brother of criminal-turned-religious leader Sant Gyaneshwar, who was allegedly murdered by Chandra Bhadra Singh and his men in February 2006.
They were appearing in the court in connection with the same case.
