The New York Times reported on Friday that Arizona Senator McCain, likely Republican candidate, mentioned a long list of government mistakes in handling the Katrina catastrophe, including incapable people, errors in assessing the size of the tragedy and poor communication.

“This will never happen again, I promise you,” the legislator said on his tour of New Orleans to attract Afro-American voters in a city severely affected by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005: 1,800 dead, 700 missing and hundreds of thousands of homeless.

However, National Democrat Committee Chairman Howard Dean pointed out that McCain voted against the initiative to dedicate 29 billion dollars for the recuperation of the hurricane affected areas in May 2006.

McCain toured the most affected sectors of New Orleans, but he did not propose concrete programs for reconstruction.
