In the capital, the maximum temperature was 40 degrees Celsius, but another concern for the residents is the rising minimum temperatures. Saturday’s low was at 24.6 degrees, at least four degrees above average.

The situation was no different in most parts of the northern and central regions. Heat wave conditions prevailed in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh and eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The highest temperature was recorded at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh at 46.7 degrees Celsius.

However, a low-pressure area that has developed over the Bay of Bengal might offer some relief to the neighbouring region in the form of a light or heavy shower by Monday.

The Met department in its latest bulletin forecast isolated rain or thundershowers in parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand and coastal Orissa.

In the northeast, similar forecasts were made for places in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

In the south, rain and thundershower is forecast in many places in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The department said the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify further.

The weather in western and central India is likely to remain dry.

The following were the maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall in major cities for the 24 hours till Saturday morning, with figures in brackets denoting deviations from the average.
