Sources from the Defense Ministry reported one people died and eleven others were wounded during the attack.

Shortly after the incident, Karzai addressed the local TV to appeal to calmness, and announced the arrest of people allegedly involved in the action.

The number of attempts to kill the Afghan president now amounts to at least four, after those in 2002, 2004 and 2007.

Karzai assumed power in December 2001 after the US invasion and later occupation of the country, where nearly 70,000 foreign soldiers, 30,000 of them from the US, are deployed.
