New York : India’s most wanted gangster Dawood Ibrahim figures prominently in Forbes’ first ever list of the world’s most dreaded criminals and terrorists, which is predictably topped by Osama bin Laden, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks in New York.
Forbes consulted with law enforcement agencies in the US and around the world to identify the 10 fugitives as the most wanted. The list released over the weekend reflects what the US business magazine calls “the most troubling convergence: the merging of international criminal activity with violent terrorism”.
Forbes, otherwise known for its lists of the rich and famous, has prepared the most wanted list, which it will periodically update, “given how global crime has become”.
Dawood heads D-Company, an organised crime group based in Mumbai, and is suspected of having organised the 1993 Bombay blasts that killed 257. The US has declared him a global terrorist and the United Nations has attempted to freeze his assets. Believed to have close links to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, he is probably in Pakistan, though the Pakistani government denies it, the magazine writes.
Osama, the most wanted man in the world, too is believed to be hiding in Pakistan, perhaps in the Waziristan region, the magazine says. President George W. Bush has said he is wanted dead or alive. But for six years, the Al Qaida chief has been able to evade the largest manhunt in international history by sticking to the unruly tribal areas along the
Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Others in the “international most wanted” roster include Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman, Russian mobster Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov, the man behind Rwanda genocides Felicien Kabuga and Italian mafia’s playboy Matteo Messina Denaro.
