Kozhikode : The job festivals organised by the Kerala government are proving a big hit in the state, with the latest one held here providing jobs for 300 on the first day.
This is the third job fest in the state organised by respective district authorities in association with the state labour department.
The Kozhikode job festival, titled Malabar Job Fest 2008, began Monday and reported a registration of 6,000 people, most of whom are certificate holders in various trades from Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Industrial Training Centres (ITCs).
“The job fest organised last year in the Thrissur district could find jobs for 1,185 people. The fest at Kollam two weeks ago landed jobs for 1,247,” said Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan, who inaugurated the Malabar Job Fest.
“We expect to find jobs for at least 1,200 educated unemployed during this fest,” Sunil Jacob, regional director of Industrial Training Department, told IANS.
According to the organisers, 40 companies took part in the first day of the job fest while 16 companies, 10 from IT and six from automobile sector, were present on the second day. Most of the companies attending the programme are from Kerala.
“The companies do not know whom to approach to get workers and the youths do not know whom to approach for a job. We are bringing them together,” said Sunil.
The organisers said they were making it sure that those offered job were ensured a decent salary.
“We are yet to put together the data to give the statistics regarding the salary offered at the fest. There is good response for the job fest. We even find it difficult to manage the crowd of job seekers. At present, around 120 government staff are at this venue processing the applications,” he added.
Kozhikode District Collector A. Jayathilak said they had plans to make the job fest an annual event.
