The sources said Fayyad got the message on Sunday afternoon “while he was busy following up measures by security services” in the West Bank, where situation was tense as security forces loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas arrested a number of Hamas members.

The sources did not reveal the content of the message but said it imposed a threat. Security measures were reinforced around Fayyad’s house.

The car used in the shooting held Palestinian National Authority (PNA) plates and the security services started to chase it down, the sources said.

Fayyad was hand-picked by Abbas to form a government in June 2007 after Hamas took over control of the Gaza Strip by force.

Hamas, which rules Gaza with its deposed government, does not recognize Fayyad’s administration since it has not been presented to the Hamas-controlled parliament for confidence voting.
