Kabul : Taliban militants ambushed two police vehicles in central Afghan province of Ghazni, killing four policemen including one commander and wounding seven others, an official said on Monday.
Muhamad Zaman, the chief of intelligence agency of Ghazni province, told media the attack occurred on Sunday evening in ZanaKhan district.
Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahed, the purported Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that around 10 police were killed and there were no casualties on the Taliban side.
In clashes elsewhere in Afghanistan, the U.S.-led Coalition killed and detained several militants during two separate operations against the anti-government militants on Sunday, said a Coalition statement.
Coalition forces searched compounds in Tala Wa Barf district of northern Afghanistan’s Baghlan province targeting militant leaders known to plan IED (Improvised Explosive Device) attacks and known to have conducted indirect-fire attacks against foreign forces, the statement said.
Several armed militants attempted to engage the force, who responded with small-arms fire, killing the militants, it said.
In another related incident, Afghan National Army and Coalition Forces launched a joint operation to disrupt militant IED networks on the same day in eastern Afghan province of Khost. Four militants were arrested.
The joint forces discovered IED-making materials, multiple machine guns and ammunition.
Afghanistan has witnessed the surge of Taliban attacks on international and Afghan troops during the past weeks when the anti-government militants continue to demonstrate their strength through suicide and roadside bombings.
Escalating insurgency and violent incidents have left more than 2,500 people dead, including over 700 civilians, since January this year in the war-torn country.
