Afghan police kill 16 Taliban

Kabul : Afghan police claimed killing 16 Taliban in separate clashes in Kandahar and Uruzgan provinces in the southern zone of Afghanistan.

Juma Gul Himmat, police chief of Uruzgan province, said police raided hideouts of Taliban in three districts and killed eleven militants.

Himmat said the clash took place on Monday. No policeman was killed or injured, he added. In Kandahar, a senior police officer said his men killed five Taliban after they attacked a police convoy in Panjwayee district on Monday.

Abdullah Khan, deputy chief of Kandahar province, told KUNA that the fighting lasted for more than an hour. Khan said the policemen stayed unhurt in the clash.

Taliban so far did not comment. In yet another incident, a roadside bomb injured five NATO soldiers in western Afghanistan, local officials said. The soldiers were on patrol in Shindand district of Herat province when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb, said a local police official on condition of anonymity. Press office of the NATO troops in Kabul so far did not issue any comment.
