New Delhi : A city court Tuesday granted bail to sacked Assam education minister Ripun Borah and two others arrested for allegedly offering bribe to an officer investigating a murder case.
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge R.K. Yadav granted bail to Borah, co-accused Mukul Pathak and R.K. Maheshwari, on their giving a surety of Rs.300,000 each.
The court also directed all the three accused to help the investigating agency in the probe and directed them not to tamper with any evidence related to the case.
The CBI arrested Borah June 3 on the charge of offering a bribe of Rs.1.7 million to one of its officials to influence the probe into the murder of Congress leader Daniel Topno, a district president of the All Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Union, who was killed during the 1996 assembly polls in Assam.
The CBI alleged that Borah tried to bribe Deputy Superintendent of Police A.B. Gupta who was probing if Borah had any role in the murder. Borah was removed from the state council of ministers within hours of his arrest.
According to the agency, Borah, along with conduit Pathak, had come to Delhi June 2 and invited the official to a hotel at Sunder Nagar in south Delhi. Pathak worked for an Assamese newspaper.
