No question of lifting ban on SIMI: Congress

By IANS,

New Delhi : Getting a breather from the Supreme Court that overrode the anti-terror court and restored the ban on the Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), the Congress Wednesday said that it is a terrorist organization and there is no question of lifting a ban on it.

“SIMI is a terrorist organisation and there is no question of lifting the ban on it. The organisation has been listed as unlawful and a terrorist organisation under Section 3 and Section 35 respectively of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari told reporters here.

On the anti-terror tribunal’s observation that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has failed to provide sufficient evidence for continuing the ban, Tiwari said: “It is the responsibility of the state governments to provide evidence to the central government about the involvement of the outfit in terrorist activities.”

“SIMI was involved in the blasts in various states and state agencies are investigating it, so evidence has to come from them,” Tiwari said.

Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for making political capital out of the Amarnath land transfer row, Tiwari said: “Before the Jammu and Kashmir elections, the BJP is trying to make a political gain out of it, and in turn is making the nation suffer.”

“The BJP has to decide if it wants to keep its political interest above the national interest,” Tiwari added.
