Pyongyang : The reconstruction of a railway line from Russia’s border town of Khasan to the Rajin port of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) will start in August, the official KCNA news agency reported Thursday.
The two countries reached the rebuilding deal in April, seven years after DPRK leader Kim Jong-il and then Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed on the outlines of the project in 2001.
The DPRK Railway Ministry and the Russian railways authority had set up two joint ventures, in which the Russian side took 70 percent shares to fulfill the project. The joint venture contractshad a duration of validity of 49 years.
After the reconstruction, Rajin, where sea cargo to and from South Korea can be unloaded, will become a critical trade terminal for the three countries.
