Bismillah Khan, police chief of Jalai district in Kandahar province, told Xinhua that it occurred 200 meters away from the base of Afghan National Army in the early morning when local workers came to the area with their vehicles.

“Those ill-fated workers were working in a grape garden near the military base and the roadside mines possibly planted by Taliban militants have killed innocent civilians,” the police official said.

However, the Taliban militants have yet to make any comment.

Afghanistan has witnessed the surge of Taliban attacks on international and Afghan troops during past weeks when the anti-government militants continue to demonstrate their strength through suicide and roadside bombings.

Escalating insurgency and violent incidents have left around 2,500 people dead with over 700 civilians since January this year in the war-torn country.
