The men, aged 24 and 20, dug a hole that was about over three metres deep at the Kehemu informal settlement on the outskirts of Rundu on Sunday morning.

A large group of members of the community and Namibian Police officers rushed to the scene, and spent more than three hours trying to rescue the duo by removing the soil that collapsed onto them.

A third man who escaped from the hole, Celestino Brazilio, told Nampa at the scene that the unfortunate incident happened just as they were about to finish digging the toilet hole.

He said he was only able to escape from the hole because the soil only covered him up to his waist.

One of the deceased came from Angola to visit his relatives in Rundu, while the other one was a student at one of the schools here.
