Hyderabad : More than seven months after a college student was raped and murdered in Andhra Pradesh, police claimed to have solved the sensational case with the arrest of a youth.
Police sources in Vijayawada Wednesday claimed that a youth had confessed to the killing of Ayesha Meeran. The victim’s mother however alleged that police were trying to implicate another “innocent person to shield some powerful people having political connections”.
P. Satyam Babu, 20, convict in a theft case, reportedly told the police that he had barged into the hostel where Ayesha lived and hit her on the head with a boulder, resulting in her death.
He then raped the dead body, wrote ‘lovely tiger’ on her body and before fleeing wrote a letter stating that the she was raped and murdered for refusing his request for ‘love’.
Police allege Babu is a psychopathic killer, involved in several other crimes.
His handwriting, blood and others samples have been brought to the forensic laboratory here for tests.
Ayesha, 19, a first year student of B. Pharmacy, was raped and murdered on the night of Dec 27 last year, in Durga ladies hostel in Ibrahimpatnam locality of Vijayawada in Krishna district.
The girl’s naked body, with stab injuries, was found in a bathroom. The murderer had dropped a letter near the body.
Ayesha, who hailed from Tenali in Guntur district, had returned to the hostel the same day after celebrating Eid at home.
Following the murder, the police had interrogated over 100 people including hostel inmates, the warden and her relatives and conducted DNA and other tests on a few suspects.
Now, after Babu’s arrest, the police claimed to have solved the case, but his relatives blocked traffic and laid siege to a police station at Anasagaram in Krishna district Wednesday, demanding his immediate release. They claimed that the youth was not mentally sound and could have not have committed the crime.
The arrest and reported confession of the youth has given yet another twist to the case, which hit the headlines following allegations by the victim’s family that relatives of a state minister were involved in the crime.
Ayesha’s mother Fatima Begum told a television channel that the arrest was another attempt by police to shield the real culprits.
Ayesha’s parents have already made representations to the president, prime minister and human rights commission, seeking a thorough and impartial probe into the crime.
