BJP accuses Congress of minority appeasement

By IANS,

Lucknow : The Congress-led government was trying to appease the minority community by not re-allotting the 40-hectare land to the Amarnath shrine management in Jammu and Kashmir, a Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) leader said here Wednesday.

The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit president, Ramapati Ram Tripathi also blamed the Samajwadi Party for the unrest in the border state.

“As the Samajwadi Party is supporting the Congress-led government in New Delhi that is adamant on its decision not to re-allot the land, it is equally responsible for the tension in Jammu and Kashmir over the land transfer issue,” he told reporters here.

The BJP leader accused Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati of acting against BJP activists who were organising demonstrations for restoration of the land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

“Over 100 of our activists were injured Tuesday. The police resorted to cane charge when they were taking out a procession in Lucknow,” said Tripathi.

In this way, the BSP was also contributing to flaring up of the communal tension in the state, he added.

Following protests in the Kashmir Valley, the land allotment was cancelled July 1, sparking violent reactions in the Jammu region.

The more than five-week long violent campaign over the plot that had been marked for the shrine board has claimed at least 15 lives in Jammu and Kashmir.
