Berlin : A close aide of German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday lambasted Russia’s “imperial behaviour” in the Georgian conflict.
Talking to the Deutschland radio broadcasting network, Andreas Schockenhoff accused Moscow of testing its political limits.
Schockenhoff who is also the government coordinator for German-Russian ties, said Russia’s war in the South Caucasus was a “sort of tit-for-tat” for the western diplomatic recognition of Kosovo’s independence.
In other related news, around 250 Georgians demonstrated peacefully against Moscow’s military raids in their home country in front of the Russian Embassy in Berlin’s city center.
The protest came only hours after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev declared an end to military operations in Georgia following five days of intense fighting which killed and injured thousands.
