New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit was Wednesday felicitated by a city radio channel for her efforts in making the capital cleaner, greener and equipping it with modern amenities.
“It is thanks to Sheila Dikshit’s vision and able stewardship that Delhi can take pride in truly world-class amenities ensuring an enhanced quality of life for its citizens. During her 10-year tenure as chief minister, she has tirelessly spearheaded the cause of public welfare,” Apurva Purohit, CEO of Radio City 91.1 FM, said at the event held in the evening here.
The function was organised to unveil the radio station’s new initiative ‘Celebrating Changing Delhi’- a month-long celebration that would provide a platform to listeners to exchange ideas and give their feedback on Delhi’s transformation in four key areas – infrastructure, entertainment, youth and lifestyle.
“We have earned success in making Delhi a better place, but it wouldn’t have been possible without our citizens’ support. Earlier Delhi used to have massive dust storms, the greenery was reducing and lots of houses and high-rise buildings were coming up,” Dikshit said on the occasion.
“The green cover in the city was only about three percent nine-ten years ago. I am happy to inform you that today the percentage of the green cover in Delhi is 20 percent.”
“Delhi used to have some 2,000 ponds years ago. Although we have not been able to restore all of them, we have achieved the restoration of almost 300 of them.”
Dikshit also urged city residents to keep public buses clean, just as they would treat their own vehicles.
Radio City’s campaign, which will begin Aug 18, will focus on three areas, Purohit said.
“We will first talk about what all has changed in Delhi and celebrate that, work together towards making it better and lastly to listen to what initiatives others are taking for the benefit of the city.”
But she made it clear that the platform was only for healthy public interaction.
“We will not become a public grievance court,” Purohit said. “This is a simple initiative. If productive ideas emerge from the listeners, we will discuss them and put it forth to the powers.”
On-air discussions, contests and field activities will be held as part of the new initiative. Popular radio jockeys will interact to with the public on the streets to listen to their views and suggestions.
