PM vows to strengthen intelligence agencies

New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday pledged to “take all possible steps” to strengthen the country’s intelligence agencies and police forces.

Speaking from the Red Fort on India’s independence day, the prime minister commended the security forces and intelligence agencies “for the dedication with which they are dealing with the problem (of terrorism) under difficult circumstances.

“But I agree that we have to further strengthen our intelligence agencies and police forces to deal with the problem of terrorism.

“We will examine the functioning of our intelligence agencies and police and security forces and take all possible steps to equip them to tackle this challenge.

“Whatever resources are required, will be provided. Whatever manpower is required will be provided. We are firm in our resolve to meet the challenge of terrorism,” he said.
