New Delhi : Nearly a month after attracting criticism from animal rights activists for sacrificing goats in Assam’s Kamakhya temple, Samajwadi Party legislator from Madhya Pradesh Kishore Samrite was again in the news on Independence Day. He threatened to immolate himself in front of the prime minister’s house to demand a separate Vidarbha state.
According to a senior police official, Samrite, a member of the Madhya Pradesh legislature from Lanjhi constituency, was stopped by police while he was going towards the prime minister’s residence at Race Course road at around 11.30 a.m. Friday.
“A week ago, Samrite had sent a letter to police threatening to commit self-immolation in front of the PM’s residence on Independence Day to demand the creation of a separate Vidharbha state out of Maharashtra and a few districts of Madhya Pradesh,” the official added.
Samrite was released after questioning.
“The MLA was stopped quite far from the PM’s residence,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), Anand Mohan.
According to unconfirmed reports, Samrite was carrying petrol while going towards Manmohan Singh’s residence.
On July 28, the legislator had sacrificed goats and a buffalo at the Kamakhya temple to seek divine blessings for the party leaders who supported the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government during July 22 trust vote.
