Patna : Hundreds of villages across Bihar feared a repeat of last year’s devastating floods following breaches in barrages and embankments, official sources said Tuesday.
A breach developed Tuesday in the Khairpur embankment in Bhagalpur that forced hundreds of people to flee from submerged villages, official sources said.
“Villagers from several villages took shelter on roads after a breach in the embankment,” said an official source in the district administration.
After a breach developed in the Kosi barrage in neighbouring Nepal, the state government Tuesday sounded red alert in Supaul, Madhepura and Araria districts of north Bihar that are considered to be flood prone.
The state government has approached the central government to talk to Nepal for flood control measures.
Official sources in the state flood control cell said that the barrage was maintained by the state’s water resources development department in Biratnagar.
Heavy rains have damaged embankments at several places that affected many villages in districts of Kishanganj, Khagaria and Muzaffarpur.
Major rivers were flowing above the danger mark, giving sleepless nights to people.
Last year several areas in the state were flood hit.
