New Delhi : Fatalities caused by heavy rain and floods in India since June jumped to 700, with 27 new victims reported in Uttar Pradesh.
Relief Commissary G. K. Tandon said Uttar Pradesh, the most populated Indian state, has the largest toll with 660 deaths owed mostly to collapsed houses and 75 people hit by lightning.

PTI News agency says north Punjab has had 14 deaths in August and five of its 19 districts are swamped by persistent rain, while several southern states report 40 fatalities due to heavy rain.
