The two marriages were solemnised in a temple in this town, about 180 km south of capital Chennai, one after another Sunday in the presence of policemen, Inspector P. Raja told IANS.

“A week ago, we received a complaint from 19-year-old Sathya who claimed that she had been living with K. Ramesh, an insurance agent, for over three years and was pregnant with his child but he was refusing to marry her. Soon after, Sathya’s cousin Avarampoo approached us and said Ramesh had promised to marry her,” Raja said.

Following discussions with family members, Ramesh married Avarampoo after first tying the knot with Sathya, who withdrew her police complaint.

Police sources said that although biagmy is a punishable offence, no action could be taken against Ramesh till someone files a complaint.

According to relatives of the newlyweds, Ramesh will celebrate his honeymoon with his second bride since Sathya is pregnant but the bigamist and his wives live as a threesome.
