Panther dies in Bhopal national park

Bhopal : A 29-month-old female panther, found dead in her cage at the Van Vihar National Park here, died of asphyxia, the authorities said Monday.

“It was an accidental death. The animal might have been hopping in the enclosure when a wire used to operate the gate got struck around its waist, leading to cardiac arrest (Sunday),” park deputy director A.K. Khare said.

Khare told IANS that the animal was brought to the park from the forests of Sidhi district on April 1, 2003. The park is now left with 16 panthers.
