Strong quake jolts western China

Lhasa (China) : A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale Monday jolted the Zhongba county in western China’s Tibet region, the country’s Earthquake Networks Centre said.

The earthquake occurred at 9.22 p.m. Gerze and Coqen counties in the region also felt the quake. There were no reports of damage or casualty so far, the centre said.

An official said after the quake, cracks appeared in some of the buildings in the Zhongba county, which has around 13 townships.

Special personnel have been sent to the county to assess the situation and carry out disaster relief operations, the official said.

Regional earthquake bureau chief Zhu Quan, said the tremor will have no effect on the Qinghai-Tibet railway, as it is several hundred kilometres away from the quake zone.

The Zhongba county has a population of 18,000. The area is prone to earthquakes.
