Washington : US President George W. Bush Monday urged Russia not to recognise Georgia’s breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent countries.
“I call on Russia’s leadership to meet its commitments and not recognise these separatist regions,” Bush said from his ranch in the US state of Texas.
“The US will continue to stand with the people of Georgia and their democracy and support its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.
Bush made the remarks after Russian parliament passed resolutions to urge their President Dmitry Medvedev to recognise the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia that enjoy close ties with Russia.
The US has accused Russia of not honouring its cease-fire deal with Georgia. It also repeatedly urged Russia to respect Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Georgia’s pro-Western government has been a strong US ally.
