Abu Dhabi : Indian Ambassador to the UAE Talmiz Ahmad called the termination of services of hundreds of nurses in the Emirates, including 160 Indian nurses unethical and insensitive.
The sacked Indian nurses had approached the country’s embassy here, yesterday, following the decision taken by the new management of the local Mafraq Hospital. Ahmad said he would register his protest with the UAE government, according to Khaleej Times.
“A number of nurses have been sacked from Al Mafraq Hospital. This has been done on the basis of certain written tests that were conducted earlier this year,” said the Indian ambassador.
“The nurses were told that these tests were for the evaluation of their skills and possible upgrading of the skills later on. But their services were terminated on the ground that they have failed the test,” he added.
He said that the Indian government considered this completely unacceptable and they were going to register a protest against the hospital management’s action with the UAE government in the strongest possible terms.
However, his strident stance may not help the nurses much as Mohamed Al Za’abi, the Director, Business Relations, Labour Ministry told the newspaper that the employees of both federal and local governments are not allowed to file complaints at the ministry.
He added that the nurses still fall under the civil procedures code and they can demand their rights.
The nurses were recruited by the Ministry of Health and Health Authority of Abu Dhabi, some of them have served the hospital for 15 to 20 years.
“At no stage has anyone conveyed to them any dissatisfaction about their work,” Ahmad said.
