Brussels : The European Union (EU) Tuesday condemned the Russian decision to recognise Georgia’s two breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent countries.
The EU in a statement said Russia’s move is “contrary to the principles of Georgia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, recognised by the UN Charter, the conference on security and cooperation in Europe and UN security council resolutions”.
“The (EU’s) presidency strongly recalls its commitment to the principle of Georgia’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders,” the statement said.
“The presidency calls for a political solution to the conflicts in Georgia and would examine the consequences of the Russian decision,” it said.
The two breakaway provinces unilaterally declared independence in the early 90s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. But their self-proclaimed independence is not recognised by the international community.
