Thiruvananthapuram : The real estate mafia, on a land buying spree across Kerala, will be curbed through a new legislation, if needed, said Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan Wednesday.

“The real estate mafia would be curbed through new legislation, if it is required. Already we have laws that prevent such buying of land,” Achuthanandan told reporters here after the weekly cabinet meeting.

He said he has been in the forefront of the struggle that led to the Kerala Land Reforms Act mooted by then E.M.S. Namboothiripad government in 1957.

The act was aimed at creating an equal society and growth in farm production by giving land to the landless and ensuring homes for all.

“You know today so many people still do not have land and in three months time we will distribute land that we seized during the Munnar operations last year to the landless,” said Achuthanandan.

“The present bout of controversy over the second phase of land reforms will only help the real estate mafia,” he said.
